Accessing Ubuntu Recovery Options when Stuck on Ubuntu Dell Splash Screen After Updates
After installing Ubuntu 20.04 with patch 1, Ubuntu installed updates on my XPS 13 9365 and the system got stuck on the Dell Ubuntu black splash screen with white spinner.
To resolve this I had to force power down the system and access the Ubuntu recovery menu. From the recovery menu I used dkpg and grub. This resolved the issues on my system.
For systems with NVIDIA graphics cards you may need to use root and type in some command lines as a super user do switch user (sudo su). Dell outline the details here:

If anyone is getting confused as to why it's opening up a grub shell, make sure you only press escape once. If you spam it recovery mode won't display.
